Murdeshwar- a Tourist Place in South India







Murdeshwar is a small town in Bhatkala Taluk of Uttara Kannada district in the state of Karnataka, India. We can reach Murdeswar at a distance of 162km from Mangalore, is the best route to reach.

The origin of the name "Murdeshwar" dates to the time of Ramayana.

This temple is built on the Kanduka Hill which is surrounded on three sides by Arabian Sea.

A huge towering statue of Lord Shiva, visible from long distance is present in the temple complex. It is the second tallest statue of Lord Shiva in the world. The tallest Lord Shiva statue is in Nepal.

According to the legend, Ravana brought the Atma Lingam from Mount Kailash. Lord Ganesh using his trick fooled Ravana on his way to Lanka and put down the Linga on the ground at Gokarna. Anger by this, Ravana tried to uproot and distory the Linga. The broken pieces of the lingam were cast away. The covering cloth of the lingam fell at Kanduka Giri and the Murdeshwar temple was built at the site.

Murdeshwar is easily accessible by road and rail. It has its own railway station. The closest Airport is at Mangalore, around150 kilometers away. Other places where you can visit is Gokarna where a Mahabaleshwar Temple and Koti Teertha are located and Idagunji where Maha Ganapati temple is located. If you have travelled to Gokarna, it is only slightly further along the way.

Other places are Karwar, Kumta,, and Goa is near to Murdeshwar.

October to February is the best time to visit Murdeshwar. December month is also good time to visit. During summer here is very hot whether, you cab avoid vising during summer.

From Murdeshwar, you can also visit Kollur Mookambika temple which is around 60km.
